Got Milk?
ArtQuest Video Arts Beginning level students at Santa Rosa High School are beginning to make their presence known as filmmakers.  They were the top prize winners in the “GOT MILK? Back to Basics” Video Contest sponsored by the California Milk Processors Board (CMPB) and their Got Milk? national campaign.  Students were challenged to produce a two-minute film that would showcase how teens could increase their academic performance and general health and well being by including milk in their breakfast regime. Video Arts is one of eight arts discipline specialties at ArtQuest, a regional magnet program for the Visual and Performing Arts at Santa Rosa High School now in its 16th year.

Led by sophomore Amy West, the team of Jimmy Cong, Stephanie Rhodes and Mason Weaver wrote the script and produced the piece with the acting assistance of ArtQuest Theatre Arts student, Bailey Boatman. The film centers around a jealous student’s attempt to find out the secret behind a popular and academically accomplished student’s success. The secret, of course, is the magical “potion” of milk!

While notable that beginning students made such an entertaining and informative film, it is also remarkable that their editor, Jimmy Cong, is legally blind. Making use of “accessibility controls” on the computer, Jimmy has learned to be a methodical and quick editor using Apple “Final Cut” software.  Also an accomplished musician on keyboards and guitar, Jimmy has demonstrated a wide range of skills and intense focus and perseverance in his work.

The film, now the property of the CMPB, has yet to be released publicly, but the enthusiasm generated by the win has injected a tangible sense of accomplishment in all the ArtQuest Video students.

The prize was an Apple MacBook computer, which will be a welcome addition to the computers used by the video students in the classroom.  ArtQuest has always been a Mac-based program since its inception in 1994.
