Chess Tournament Is In The Pink
This Saturday (Feb. 19) register for the 2nd Annual Girls Chess Tournament. Girls of all ages and skill levels are welcome. Wearing pink t-shirts and playing on pink boards with pink sets the tournament feels more like fun than a competition. Players are grouped in quads of similar grade levels and will play a total of 3 games. Every player receives a medal and the winner of each quad receives a trophy. It’s a good time for all.
Chess has fascinated humans for almost 2,000 years. Today many educators, parents and chess experts realize that chess education improves a host of mental abilities. A testimony from a Chess for Kids instructor recently proves that the game is neither gender nor age sensitive: "I just taught my 6 year old niece to play chess. The family kept saying…’I don't know, she's still pretty young!’ I said, ‘Don't worry, she'll understand what she understands and we won't go any faster than that.’ We played for over 4 hours!”
Chess works because it is self-motivating. The goals of attack and defense challenge players to analyze a situation and plan a strategy to solve the problem. Over 60 schools in Sonoma County have been offering instructional chess classes through Chess for Kids, a local non-profit organization. All proceeds from the 2nd Annual Girls Chess Tournament will benefit The Living Room, a day-time drop-in center that provides a safe haven to ease the adversity of homelessness in a kind and caring atmosphere.
