More than 100 children are already scheduled for dental appointments on February 6 at St. Joseph Dental Clinic as part of “Give Kids A Smile” activities throughout the Sonoma County. St. Joseph is among several dental service providers offering free exams and treatments for low-income children at locations in Healdsburg and Santa Rosa on that day. Give Kids A Smile is a nationwide campaign designed to provide education and preventative and restorative care to children who lack access to care. Also providing logistical and promotional support for Give Kids A Smile activities are the Community Action Partnership and the Sonoma County Oral Health Access Coalition.
Dental decay is the number one unmet health need for California children, according to a fact sheet published by the Sonoma County Oral Health Access Coalition, with 25 percent of California children never having been to a dentist.
The Sonoma County 2008 Give Kids a Smile day event culminated in the largest dental access day in Sonoma County history, reaching more than 450 children at seven different locations.
