Back to school shopping gets underway early for another group of Sonoma County children who otherwise might not be able to enjoy the sense of confidence that goes along with starting the first day of school fully prepared.
This Saturday, Aug. 4, local Active 20-30 Clubs from Redwood Empire, Santa Rosa, and Healdsburg will bring close to 210 children ages 5–17 shopping from 6–10 a.m. The stores and vendors of Coddingtown Mall have graciously welcomed the successful event back for another year, with JC Penney, Old Navy, Icing, and Payless Shoes opening their doors before regular business hours for the children to use $150 gift cards provided to each by the clubs.
And the fun doesn't stop there. Haircuts will be provided by Redwood Empire Beauty College, and vision and dental screenings will also be given. Children will receive a new backpack filled with all the necessary school supplies they need for the school year. Each child will be paired with an adult Active 20-30 Club volunteer who will walk them through the process of selecting items that best fits their needs.
The Back to School Children's Shopping Spree is funded and organized by the local Active 20-30 Clubs, a social and philanthropic organization for young adults. The children who participate in the event are referred by agencies that work with children within Sonoma County. Other Active 20-30 chapters around the county, state and nation will hold similar events this month.
The Active 20-30 Club of the Redwood Empire #1029 is part of a National and International service organization that provides young women between the ages of 20-39 with an opportunity for personal growth, friendships, and leadership. This volunteer organization is dedicated to helping Sonoma County children in need through the funding of hands-on events and direct financial contributions.
