Think Steampunk meets the circus with fun, food, and music taking over Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square and you’ve got an idea of what’s in store when The Wunderkammer comes to life on Aug. 25 from 11am–6pm with the ever-popular Great Sonoma County Handcar Races at noon.
The event is a public celebration of mechanical railcar races; visual, culinary, and costumed performing arts with community participation; ingenuity embracing sustainability, alternative transportation; and good old fashioned fun.
Tinkerers, artists, and eccentrics both young and old are invited to participate with a playful and inspired mixture of fond remembrance for a stylized industrial railroad past remixed with progressive styles and technologies of today.
The public is invited to partake with “costumed buffoonery and enlightened interaction (never fear: those with inhibitions in the costume department can feel free to come as you are and enjoy),” according to the event’s Facebook description.
This is also a family-friendly event with a face painter on hand specializing in circus faces, a Circus Stage, the Children's Midway with jumpy houses beyond belief, as well as the Children's Museum of Sonoma County's "Museum on the Go.”
General admission tickets for those 13 and older are $11.19 online (including fees) until Aug. 24. Children under 13 are free. Go to wunderkammerfestival.com for more information.
