The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps low and moderate income families and individuals to file their income taxes. Trained volunteers will provide this no-cost service to Sonoma County residents starting on January 14, 2010.

Last year Sonoma County VITA volunteers helped file 5,771 returns which resulted in tax filers receiving over $3 million in refunds. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is one of the most effective federal anti-poverty programs devised. In 2008 $869,942 EITC dollars were captured in Sonoma County through the VITA program. Many families who don’t have to file or pay taxes can get a refund if they file a tax return. Similarly the Child Tax Credit, worth up to $1,000 per child can be partially refundable to working families with limited or no tax liability.

There will be VITA sites in locations throughout Sonoma County. With the free e-filing that is available, tax filers can get their refunds within six days. If you are interested in becoming either a volunteer income tax preparer or would like to get assistance filing your 2009 tax return please call 211 to volunteer or make an appointment.

The Sonoma County Human Services Department (HSD) strives to protect and improve the well-being of the individuals and families who reside in Sonoma County – especially those who cannot protect themselves. HSD accomplishes this by providing many different forms of assistance, including employment services, in-home support to aging and disabled individuals, Veteran’s services, foster care, Food Stamps, cash assistance, and eligibility for medical services. HSD also operates 24-hour emergency telephone lines for reporting incidents of suspected child and/or adult abuse. The Human Services Department employs approximately 640 caring, contributing and dedicated individuals who work from seven locations in Santa Rosa to provide these vital County services.
