Teen Center Empowers Teens to Soar by Sponsoring First Flight Program
The Valley of the Moon Teen Center Girls’ Circle in partnership with Sonoma County pilot Malvika Matharoo and North Coast Air, Inc. have launched, “Take to the Sky,” a program designed to encourage young women to pursue their dreams in the field of aviation. The program will offer the winner of an essay contest an opportunity to soar over the Sonoma County coastline for an introductory flight, followed by lunch with Matharoo.
The program, which plans its inaugural flight in November 2009, requires young women participating in the Girls’ Circle program to submit a 500-word essay responding to the prompt, “What are your dreams, and how will you achieve them.”
Matharoo, a minority and female pilot, was inspired to start the program as a means of demonstrating to young women that they too can achieve their dreams in the predominantly male field of aviation. Matharoo graduated with top honors from the University of North Dakota (UND) in 2007 with a degree in Aviation Management.

“I was one of those girls who always wanted to be different, and often dreamed of being a superhero who could fly. I can’t fly myself, but with a little engineering help, I can now fly up to 8,000 feet,” Matharoo said. “I want to show young women out there that they should never settle for less than they deserve in life. If you pursue your dreams, you can do anything you wish. By providing these young women with the opportunity to fly with me, I hope to show them that if I can make my dreams come true, so can they.” She added, that Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
