Supernatural Bug

The praying mantis is so named because of its enlarged femurs, which make the insect look like a supplicant. The ancient Greeks even believed the bug carried supernatural powers, and so gave it the name mantis, which means diviner or soothsayer. Youth ages 7–13 can find out more about the praying mantis, and even go searching for the insects, at Sonoma County Regional Parks’ Praying Mantis Expedition at the Laguna de Santa Rosa Trail in Santa Rosa. The event, part of the Junior Ranger Program, will be held on September 11, 2–3:30 p.m. The cost is $10–$12; registration is required at parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/Play/Calendar or via tinyurl.com/y3ecur.
