¡Viva Mexico!
In 1861, France was hungry to create a monarchy in Mexico. Mexicans fought their adversary, garnering a decisive and unexpected win at the 1862 Battle of Puebla. Though the Franco-Mexican War went on for another five years, the victory became symbolic of the Mexican resistance and is still celebrated today during Cinco de Mayo, otherwise known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. Locally, Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated on May 1, noon–6 p.m., at the Sonoma Plaza in Sonoma. Presented by the La Luz Center, a nonprofit that serves the Latino immigrant community, the free event will feature traditional dancers and mariachi musicians, children’s crafts and games; Mexican food will be available for purchase.
