Summer Art Camp 2022

Camps run Mon. – Thurs. from June 13 – July 21, 2022

Morning and afternoon sessions from 8:30 – 4:30.

Healdsburg Center for the Arts Summer Art Camp 2022 offers your child a safe, fun, and creative experience. Each camp is led by a teaching artist who works closely with campers, ages 3-17, to explore and develop new art projects and artistic skills. Class sizes are small so everyone receives individual attention safely, and participants have the opportunity to learn, share, connect, and celebrate their work.

Each session is 3.5 hours per day x 4 days = 14 hours of art, Costs between "$175 to $225 per session

Ages 3-5

Week 1 (June 13 – 16)

Eco Garden Art


Teacher: Harvest Nieto and Assistant
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Nursery School, 444 1st St.

Budding artists will design and create whimsical and funky twig bird houses, painted totems, found-object mobiles and creative wire and wood creatures for the garden. The focus will be on both design and construction or assembly. We’ll have recycled and scrap materials available; students are encouraged to bring your own from home to add to the collection. This class will have a teacher and an assistant and we will take breaks out in the shady and delightful play yard.

Week 2 (June 20 -23)

Mixed Media Madness


Teacher: Harvest Nieto and Assistant
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Nursery School, 444 1st St.

Young artists learn hands-on techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture using a variety of fine art mediums and recycled materials as they take inspiration from the season and nature around them. This class will have a teacher and an assistant and we will take breaks out in the shady and delightful play yard.

Week 3 (June 27 – 30)

At the Circus


Teacher: Maria Gerstley
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Nursery School, 444 1st St.

Each class will be filled with song, story, dance and art with each component complementing the theme. In At the Circus, students create masks and costumes, perform daring acrobatics and dance moves, listen to stories about the circus and create images of a 3-ring performance complete with elephants and clowns, horses and riders, tigers and trainers. This class will have a teacher and an assistant and we will take breaks out in the shady and delightful play yard.

Week 4 (July 5 – 8 – no class on July 4)

Fairies, Sprites and Gnomes


Teacher: Maria Gerstley and Assistant
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Nursery School, 444 1st St.

Each class will be filled with song, story, dance and art with each component complementing the theme. In Fairies, Sprites and Gnomes, students create costumes, perform dances in a fairy ring and take off on sprite flights, hear stories about the amazing worlds beyond our own and create fairy houses and garden gnomes. This class will have a teacher and an assistant and we will take breaks out in the shady and delightful play yard.

Week 5 (July 11 – 14))

Under the Sea


Teacher: Maria Gerstley and Assistant
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Nursery School, 444 1st St.

Each class will be filled with song, story, dance and art with each component complementing the theme. In Under the Sea, students create mermaid and mermen costumes, perform daring aquatic flips and dance moves, listen to stories about the sea, sing sea chanties and create images of the ocean and its inhabitants both large and small. This class will have a teacher and an assistant and we will take breaks out in the shady and delightful play yard.

Ages 6-9

Week 1 (June 13 – 16)

Multiples: Printmaking, Stamping and Stenciling


Teacher: Asherah Weiss
Time: 8:30am - 12:00 pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

Explore the joy of printmaking using a variety of methods from simple to more complex. Try printing with found objects, mono-printing and gelli printing. Create your own stamps and stencils or use those we have on hand to create expressive mixed media projects.

Week 2 (June 20 -23)

Introduction to Ceramics


Teacher: Kelly Ebeling
Time: 8:30am - 12:00 pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

Roll, pinch, and coil your clay as you learn all about the tradition of ceramic hand building! Practice basics in shaping and attaching pieces of clay together while creating unique works of decorative and functional art like bowls, pots, tiles, and figurines! We will also use block printing techniques as students learn how to carve into soft printmaking blocks to press into clay to create interesting textures and patterns. All creations will be glazed and kiln fired to ensure their durability.

Week 3 (June 27 – 30)

Studio Painting, Drawing and Collage


Teacher: Kelly Ebeling
Time: 8:30am - 12:00 pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

Students will draw and paint with various materials such as charcoal, graphite, color pencils, markers, watercolor, and ink pens and fine papers. We will learn techniques in shading, blending, and building texture. Various collage techniques will also be incorporated. Through each medium, students explore the art of various modern and contemporary artists.

Week 4 (July 5 – 8 – no class on July 4)

Enter the 3rd Dimension


Teacher: Justine Mendoza
Time: 8:30am - 12:00 pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

Transform your imagination into three dimensions while learning the basics for working sculpturally with a multitude of mediums. Students may learn how to sculpt wired figures, construct an upcycled animal creature, make a monster, or design an architectural dwelling. They will also create 3D art through a variety of materials such as paper, paint, cardboard, recycled materials and more.

Week 5 (July 11 – 14)

Garden Art Makers


Teacher: Kelly Ebeling
Time: 8:30am - 12:00 pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

We’ll tinker, build, and create garden art using recycled materials and what we can scavenge from nature. Students learn to restore, upcycle, convert and invent everything for the garden including decorative totems, mosaic flower pots, clay animal sculptures, funky birdhouses, wind chimes and colorful fairy houses.

Week 6 (July 18 – 21)

Comics + Characters


Teacher: Justine Mendoza
Time: 8:30am - 12:00 pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

Get into character! Students will create their own characters, exploring shape language, exaggeration, and facial expressions. They will then craft their own comics exploring visual storytelling using industry techniques. A great class for students interested in character design, animation, graphic novels, comics, and cartooning.

Ages 10-17

Week 1 (June 13 – 16)

Ceramics: Wheel and Handbuilding


Teacher: Linus Lancaster and Assistant
Time: 1:00pm - 4:30pm
Location: Healdsburg Swim Center drop-off/HHS Ceramics Room back door at 360 Monte Vista Ave.

Learn how to throw pottery on the wheel to form functional pieces, such as cups, bowls and plates. Through individual guidance and repetition, we will develop skills in our throwing techniques. This class can accommodate beginning potters as well as those with previous throwing experience. Repeating students are encouraged to sign up. In addition to the wheel, we will also explore handbuilding clay using simple tools using common techniques of pinch pottery, coil building, and slab building. Please note: All thrown pieces require two kiln firings, so pieces will not be available for pickup until approximately 7-10 days after class ends. Fired pieces can be packaged and shipped for an additional charge.

Introduction to Digital Photography


Teacher: Nicole Schlaeppi
Time: 1:00pm - 4:30pm
Location: Healdsburg Swim Center drop-off/HHS Ceramics Room back door at 360 Monte Vista Ave.

In this creative, fun-filled camp, students will learn about camera settings, lighting, composition, posing and more. We will play some photo games and experiment with what we’ve learned – this will definitely be a “learn by doing” experience! Students can use any digital camera with settings (CoolPix, PowerShot or other “point and shoot” or a mirrorless or a DSLR! HCA can also supply basic digital cameras, if needed. Smart phone cameras will also work. Our field work will be in and around the Healdsburg Plaza and in the classroom where we be downloading, editing and manipulating images via a laptop.

Week 4 (July 5 – 8 – no class on July 4)

Drama, Improv and Pantomime


Teacher: Loretta Rotolo
Time: 1:00pm - 4:30pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

This fun, experiential drama series offers instruction on acting, improvisation and character development. Based on imagination, sensory, pantomime and improvisational games and small group activities, students will create their own scenes and characters. Students will learn how to work collaboratively as they develop listening and vocal skills and engage in story dramatization and play building. Everyone succeeds in Creative Drama!

Murals and Street Art


Teacher: Asherah Weiss
Time: 1:00pm - 4:30pm
Location: Healdsburg Community Center, 1557 Healdsburg Ave.

Think big out-of-the-box art-making! We will get inspired by the messages and styles of graffiti and street art, and then create our own collaborative public project. We will try techniques such as stenciling, lettering, and water-based spray paint application. We will then design one collaborative piece to be on display as a community artwork.
