Crawfish: We, the Invisible
A work-in-progress written and performed by Gamal Chasten
On September 11th, 2020 a homeless man speaks to us from Berkeley, CA about his journey from home to homelessness.
Lily Janiak writes about Crawfish in the San Francisco Chronicle.
“‘Ya see, what people don’t realize is that homeless people are anthropologists,’” says Crawfish. “We observe life.” Those observations, in Gamal Abdel Chasten’s “Crawfish: We, the Invisible,” are rich, poetic and keen. Among the pithiest is one he repeats in his solo play: “I didn’t move here. I was moved.” Percussion freestyles yet drives him forward. Each syllable is a melodic playground. Punch lines jolt: You might not be sure if you’re allowed to laugh.”
A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to support a local migrant worker charity.
